I was surpised at all the comments about the pronunciation of 'herb'. I am a Brit and I originally thought 'erb' was wrong, but it is not. The word comes from the French 'erbe' which came from the Latin 'herbe' and was pronounced 'erb' by us Brits until the 19th century when educated people wanted to distinguish themselves from common people who said things like, 'ows yer father' and 'cor blimey guvnor what a nice owse you live in'. So the letter aitch (not haitch) was introduced as correct pronunciation. Not sure what happened to 'hour' and heir'.

When I was at school we had very different accents around the country, but most of us could at least write properly and talk properly if we had to. Nowadays we have nothing to shout about. Our educational levels are down the pan…innit. That's excessive multicultural immigration for you. Classrooms of kids speaking multiple languages, except English and the school teacher left to deal with the chaos instead of concentrating on teaching to one group.

Hey if you haven't heard "erb" before its because you're too young or just a bit ignorant. Pronunciation of the word changes with trends every 10 years or so. Watch a few old cooking shows…
